Salatgarten, the bi-annual newsletter of the Hans Fallada Society, combines news from the literary world and the Hans Fallada Museum with essays on Fallada research. Articles on the reception and creative work of the author stand alongside biographical aspects and features on selected works of literature.
The magazine was launched at the turn of the year 1987/88 when the first – and subsequently annual – newsletter of the Friends of Hans Fallada was published, a folded brochure in A5 format. In 1991, it became the Hans Fallada Society’s Mitteilungen (Newsletter), which appeared bi-annually and initially had between 12 and 16 pages. In 1994, a newly designed, more comprehensive version of the magazine was published under the name Salatgarten (Salad Garden), which was originally Fallada’s preferred title for his favourite novel Wir hatten mal ein Kind (Once We Had a Child).
Salatgarten was edited by Achim Ditzen until December 2014, when Dr Sabine Koburger took over. Other members of the editorial team are Lutz Dettmann, Doris Haupt and Hannes Rother.
The magazine can be purchased for €5.50 per copy (plus postage as appropriate) or as a subscription with two issues a year for €4.50 per copy (plus postage). Members receive the brochure free of charge as part of their membership fee.
