We are delighted that you have found your way to the website of the Hans Fallada Society and the Hans Fallada Museum in Carwitz! Just to be sure you know that a visit to our museum is also worthwhile, we would like to tell you something about it.
The present-day Hans Fallada Museum is housed in Hans Fallada’s former home, where he lived and worked from 1933 and 1944.
Since 1995, the Hans Fallada Society has been running a vibrant museum in the building and grounds – a museum that has been certified by the Federal Government as a ‘cultural memorial of national significance’.
Take a look over Hans Fallada’s shoulder as he works on his novels in his study, which has been restored with its original furnishings. On the veranda, in the dining room – both with their original fittings – and in the kitchen, you can also experience first-hand how the author lived.
Marvel in the ‘Hans Fallada, His Life and Work’ theme-room – in what was once the bedroom – at how multi-faceted and comprehensive Fallada’s oeuvre is, and how tortuous and ambivalent his biography! In the former room of his daughter Lore, you can get to know Fallada the author of children’s books. Watch one of the impressive documentaries or a cartoon based on Fallada’s stories in the film room, situated in the former guest room on the upper floor. Here, you can also see Fallada’s death mask.
Explore the 15,000m grounds on the banks of Lake Carwitz, where you will find the wonderfully designed triangular bed planted just as it was originally. You can also see Fallada’s original apiary, which has been restored while preserving its historic substance, his boat house reconstructed true to the original, his meadow orchard and the ’seating area on the river bank‘. Here you can also become acquainted with Fallada the accomplished farmer, or simply relax in the spacious and beautifully tended grounds.
Experience one of our well researched special exhibitions in the former barn of the Fallada property, which – like the house itself – was built in 1848; or attend one of our numerous events in the barn hall or in our wonderfully located barn theatre – an amphitheatre! Come to our annual Hans Fallada Days, which are always held on the weekend before or after his birthday on 21 July. Or visit our ‘Fridays with Fallada’, a summer series of events including readings, concerts, theatre performances and film shows that begin every Friday at 8 PM.
Whether you come alone or in a group, we offer numerous possibilities to draw closer to Fallada – via guided group tours, lectures, readings, literary walks, a 124-page museum guide, an audio guide for children and adults, or a children’s puzzle book. All these can be found in our Museum Shop where you can buy all available Fallada books, audio books, audio plays, films and secondary literature, as well as postcards, souvenirs and hiking maps.
There is also plenty on offer for Fallada researchers on the Fallada property as the Neubrandenburg Literature Centre’s Hans Fallada Archives are located in the upper part of the barn and can be accessed by prior arrangement.
Visit us! Enter into Fallada’s Carwitz ‘Welteneinsamkeit’ (’world solitude’)! Enjoy the Feldberg Lake District at its most attractive. Welcome to the Hans Fallada Museum!
